Happy NYE 2008!

Another year...another dolla. Holla!

Hope all of you have enjoyed your year and have a lot of positive things to reflect on. I do...I'll get to that later. Right now all I can think about is how bad I want to go home and get ready to celebrate! Why?

Because I have the sexiest, short black cocktail dress to wear. I will complete my New Year's outfit with new sparkly gold heels, and black and gold earrings, cocktail ring and bangles. It is New Year's after all, which is basically the one night you can go balls-to-the-wall on fancy outfits.

Because I'm hosting a little prefunk shindig at my house with hors d'ouvres and bottles of wine and champagne. I will be getting a little saucy with some of my bestest friends and my good-lookin date.

Because I CANNOT WAIT to ring in the New Year, laughing and dancing with my good-lookin date. Who will be, embarrassingly, the first guy I've had to kiss at midnight in nearly a decade.

Because we all will be dancing, boozing and laughing the night together at SeeSound Lounge's NYE 2008 celebration with a champagne toast at midnight, which will be my first time celebrating the New Year with a fancy night out in the city!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Currently Feeling for 2007: Satisfied and lucky, yet a little stuck.
Currently Anticipating in the New Year: Finding a new job.
Currently Dreading/Loving in 2008: Turning 26 and Mike leaving for three months. (Dread). Going to Vegas in March and Hawaii in May. (Love).

Hazy Holiday Recap

I’m slowly recuperating from the holiday season. Between splitting my time with divorced parents, work, Christmas shopping and all the holiday partying I had to do with friends in town from out-of-state, I’m utterly exhausted. Hence the quietness on the blog front. Here is a recap of my four-day holiday weekend:

Friday: Justin was in town from L.A. for Christmas and the college friend crew got together once again for a night of celebrating each others’ friendship with drunken debauchery. Justin and I were later trying to figure out when the last time was that we saw each other sober, and we figured it was somewhere around 2004.

Saturday: Amanda, Baby Daddy and I didn’t get off the couch till approximately 4 p.m. It was one of the roughest hangovers that I’ve had in a long time. (Damn cheap bar vodka!) We watched The Grinch, slept, ate, slept some more, and then finally made it home with an hour to spare to get ready for Vanessa’s Christmas Sweater party, which was nothing short of entertaining. This year the spiked egg nog and liquored drinks were even more free flowing than years gone past, and it wasn’t long before the party was loud, crazy and silly. It was a pleasure, as always, to see all my lovely high school girlfriends in one room, their significant others, and a few stragglers like Justin who actually has become good friends with two of my high school girl friends that he lives near in California. Viva my besties and holiday sweaters!

Sunday: I spent all day painting and gluing coffee canisters I made for the family members on my dad’s side of the family. It was meticulous and drawn-out, but I think they turned out pretty nifty once I filled them up with coffee. Baby Daddy and I then went out for a couple beers at McMenamin’s Pub on lower Queen Anne, but decided to bar crawl instead of going home. We stopped in Solo for a drink in the middle of a benefit for the sound guy from The Crocodile. The place was hoppin, and we ordered a Hoegaarden-esque beer and watched all the hipsters with fingerless gloves and black-rimmed glasses. Next we stopped at Jabu’s to play ping-pong and ended the night at Ozzie’s. We were both sufficiently tipsy. It’s just so hard to pass up those no-work-the-next-morning opportunities!

Monday: My parent’s hosted their annual Christmas Eve party with Cosmo Chi Chis and bottles of wine and champagne. My loony Aunt who resembles Magda from There’s Something About Mary was of course in attendance—always a pleasure. I stuffed myself silly with orange honey-glazed ham, parmesan puff pastries, shrimp cocktail, green beans, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, orange mandarin jello, and my mom’s decadent chocolate raspberry truffle cake. My parent’s really know how to throw a good party, and I was in bed fast asleep by 1 a.m.

Tuesday:
I woke up Christmas morning to a few excellent presents even though we were supposed to be skipping Christmas this year in light of our family Hawaiian vacation planned for May. I scored trinkets from Sephora, Victoria Secret and the new Gwen Stefani L.A.M.B. perfume. After opening presents, I quickly rushed off to my dad’s house in Castle Rock—a little town two hours south. I arrived just in time for dinner at 2:45 (that’s right!! Dinner at 2:45!!). I stayed to open presents, where I was gifted a new elliptical trainer that I’m planning on using in front of the TV all January, February and March so I’m nice and skinny in time for the Sandbar. I then wrapped up my Christmas with the two-hour drive back to Seattle around 8 p.m., and exchanged gifts with Baby Daddy where I opened the most beautiful white gold and gold large butterfly pendant necklace and a wine opener called The Rabbit. LOL for those of you who watch Sex and the City.

So here I am, a few days this week at attempting to return my gifts, pack away the boxes and put together my new elliptical trainer….and it starts again. I will be hitting the town tonight with Amanda and her boyfriend Luke, who are both in town from Canada, try to sleep on Saturday, hit the slopes on Sunday for some boarding, then a swanky night on the town for New Years. Hopefully by the time work rolls back around again on Wednesday, I won’t be dead. Love you!

Currently Feeling: Antsy to get the heck out of work. I’m BORED.
Currently Anticipating: New Years with my besties and Baby Daddy.
Currently Hating: Thinking about Baby Daddy leaving in two weeks.

Coordinated Bookshelves

I am a list-maker, color-coordinated closet, organized freak. I don't go as far as to label my cupboards like prudish Sally Fields in Mrs. Doubtfire, but I'm a stickler for organization.

I would never have thought to go this far with my organization, however, but I LURV IT!!:

It's a color-coordinated bookshelf! Courtesy of Karyn Bosnak, blog author of Pretty in the City. I think it's genius and so much more appealing (obviously). As soon as I get a spare moment, I'm color-coordinating the ridiculously huge bookshelf in our apartment. Long live organization!

Currently Feeling: So much better than yesterday.
Currently Anticipating: Spending time by myself tonight. I've been occupied with visitors, and I miss my alone time.

20-Something's Holiday Bananza

Oh, the holiday season is in full swing and my calendar is feeling the squeeze:

Tonight: Dinner at Tup Thim Thai and an 8 p.m. showing of I Am Legend at the Imax Theatre in the Pacific Science Center
Tomorrow: Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker at The Triple Door
Wednesday: Downtown Christmas shopping (to hit up Urban Outfitters in an attempt to find a cute, clever or useful gift for Baby Daddy) and a sleepover with the lil’ sis
Thursday: Drinks and mingling with high school girl friends who are in town from San Diego for Christmas
Friday: Drinks and debauchery with the fifth addition to the College Clique who is in town from L.A.
Saturday: Ugly Christmas Sweater party and gift exchange at Vanessa’s house (Which I borrowed the most perfect sweater from my mom, shoulder pads attached)
Sunday: Post-Seahawks game birthday party in Pioneer Square for my friend Abe
Monday: Christmas Eve party at my parent’s house
Tuesday: Down south to my dad’s house for Christmas celebration number two
Wednesday: Back to work

And, between all this stuff and working full time, I have to squeeze in last minute gift buying and time to complete the craft project gifts I’m making for my dad’s side of the family. YIKES!

Currently Feeling: Busy, obviously. And a little short on time.
Currently Anticipating: Getting the last-minute gifts ironed out.
Currently Loving: Cozy winter nights.

I'm Dreaming of a Pink Christmas

White?! Screw white. I want my Christmas to be pink and sparkly—20-Something style.

Enter Christmas tree that my co-worker found at Target yesterday for $2.50 and decided to buy it for me, along with pink, purple, green, turquoise and silver glittered Christmas bulbs. Could it be anymore me?

I sat on my bed last night and decorated my little foot-tall, pink shimmery Christmas tree underneath the glowing twinkle of my hot pink Christmas lights that I hung up around the window in my bedroom. It is gag-me, over-the-top girly. I can only imagine how many men would outwardly groan or secretly loath my love for hot pink. But I sent a photo of my little hot pink wonder of a tree to Baby Daddy and he wrote hack:

"I like your pink tree! It's hot, just like you!"

Exactly what I wanted to hear...

Currently Feeling: Excited to knock off some Christmas shopping this paycheck, most of which I'm doing online. God bless the Internet.
Currently Anticipating: Drinks with Noah tonight.
Currently Listening To: Warm 106.9 Christmas music. That's right. You read it. I'm listening to Christmas music at work to get me in the spirit. After all, it does only come once a year!

26 x 365: Day 26, Tre (2006)

You were the epitome of my attraction to men.

Should have learned my lesson the first time.

Obstructing the Law in the Name of Christmas

I have joked that I have the worst luck ever. I believe that it is people like me who the term Murphy’s Law was invented. Usually, if anything can go wrong in my life, it will. I am the person that falls asleep twice with food in the oven; the person who drops their deodorant in the toilet, which later costs me $75; the only one in a group of seven who forgets their passport and then still can’t get on the plane with a birth certificate because my last name doesn’t match my Social Security card; the person whose rent check clears a day early the one time my work doesn’t give me my paycheck in time; the girl who runs out of gas which burns her fuel injection system and later costs $600, among other really unlucky events.

My luck changed, however, last week when I outran the cops (!that’s right—OUTRAN the cops!) to escape a potential crippling, holiday-time ticket. Booyah! See ya!

Last Thursday, I was on my way home from work and wanted to stop at the tanning salon on top of Queen Anne hill. The light to turn left onto Queen Anne Avenue was green, so I sped up really quick to get through the light in time. Unfortunately, there was a car in front of me that didn’t feel the need to be in any hurry. The light turned yellow as they were going through, and I continued to speed through the light—on their tail—as it turned from yellow to red. As I turned to go up the hill, it caused the line of cars coming down the hill to wait a short bit for me to clear the intersection. I noticed that the car closest to me, waiting in the other direction for the green light, was a cop. Damn!

As I went up the hill, I looked back and saw that he had pulled through the light, turned on his lights and was doing a three-point turn around to come up the hill after me. (Presumably to ruin my already fragile Christmas shopping budget.) Oh no, Mr. Grinch Cop. You’re not ruining Christmas for me!

Dah who dor-aze… I made a quick turn onto the next street running perpendicular to Queen Anne Avenue, looked in my review to see that he was still trying to attempt what was now a five-point turn around, pressed my foot to the accelerator down the side street, took my next left then my next right, pulled over, wrenched up my parking brake, turned off my lights and literally jumped out of my car and started walking down the street. See if you can catch me now! I was slightly nervous that I’d get caught, attempting to out run a cop, (isn’t that Obstructing the Law or something?!) However, I figured that if I was walking on the street, there was no way the Grinch Cop could prove that I was the same girl in the red bug that ran the red light, or that I even drove a red bug. Cause really officer, I’m just enjoying the evening…

He never drove past or found me. So, I waited for 10 minutes before getting back into my car and then drove back roads to the tanning salon.

Looks like my luck might be changing this year…

Sucker.

Invasion of the Baby Screamers

Sarah and I have a huge new development at our place of residence in beautiful Seattle. We have a baby and a new dog! No, we’re not lesbian lovers who secretly had a sperm donor impregnate one of us or a surrogate mother. Nope. In fact it’s really exciting for us…neighbors below us just moved in and they have a screaming child and yappy dog, so now we don’t have to worry about entering that phase of our lives on our own! We can just live vicariously through our neighbors!

I think this is really exciting.

I now get to wake up at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday to my new child running, no slash that, thundering up and down the hardwood floors, screaming, “Tater tots! Tater tots!” I also get to hear, “Mommy?!” clear as day while I’m putting on my makeup in the mornings. My evenings consist of sitting on the couch with earplugs in while I read so I can try to drown out our yappy dog. And more than once a week, I get to participate in a screaming match with my child—during her bath, while brushing her hair and for no reason at all most the time! She especially likes to frequently scream, “Mommy I haaatteeee yoouuuu!” at the top of her lungs.

Sarah is a little new to this whole baby thing and lost her cool the other night (some mother you are, Sarah). In the midst of one of our darling little daughter’s fits, she screamed, “SHUUUT UUUP!” at the top of her lungs. Three minutes later there was a gentle tapping at our front door. I don’t think our twin parents were happy with our momentary relapse in proper parenting, and they chose to explain the situation to us on a little note, slipped under the door.

It was, of course, written on the back of a little scribbled drawing of a pink and purple dinosaur.

Oh yeah, did I tell you our new little daughter is quite the artist too?

I think she takes after me.

Currently Feeling: Like I want but don’t need a cheeseburger.

Opposites Attract

While walking through Blockbuster with Baby Daddy, I asked if he’d seen a particular movie.

“I don’t like horror movies,” he said.

“WHAT?! You don’t like horror movies? Sometimes I don’t think we could be more opposite,” I retorted.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I like horror movies you don’t. I like to read, you don’t. You go to church, I don't. I like Seattle. You like the Eastside…”

I trailed off, listing just a few of the reasons why I feel Baby Daddy and I couldn’t be more of a baffling match.

“I guess opposites attract,” I said afterward, hoping to avoid any potential hurt feelings.

---

A couple days later, I was standing in my kitchen, making dinner, and Baby Daddy was sitting in my living room. My latest read, "The Pillars of Earth," was sitting on the coffee table.

“Do you like "The Pillars of Earth?" What’s it about?” he asked.

I smiled in the kitchen. “Yeah, actually. I like it a lot….” And then I proceeded to describe the plot to him.

He didn’t care. I know that. He was simply making an effort to connect with me on something I pointed out that I enjoy. I guess two people can be complete opposites and not at all enjoy the same things, but I believe it might work when both parties share an invested interest in what makes the other tick.

At that moment, I couldn’t have liked him more for simply asking me about a book.

You have a great aura, Part deux

A little while back, I wrote about auras, their colors, and how I’d ran across more than one person who’d commented on mine.

It happened again…has it become common practice to tell someone that they have a great aura? Maybe this is the new compliment of the 21st century.

When I was on my first date with Interested Reader, we wrapped up the end of the night at The Great Nabob with some of his friends. I was laughing and flirting and enjoying myself immensely. In the middle of a conversation with Interested Reader (Montana transplant) and one of his friends (Indiana transplant), I noticed that a guy at the table and a girl next to him were looking at me and nodding. It was clearly a “we’re talking about you” moment. These are always a little weird; but since we’re not in high school anymore, I don’t automatically assume that the conversation is negative. It still caused me to pause mid-sentence, and I looked at them and smiled. The guy leaned over the table and asked, “Are you from Seattle?”

“Yep. Born and raised,” I said. (For those who are Seattle transplants, I am more “from Seattle” than not even though I actually grew up outside the city.)

They looked at each other and nodded. “We thought so.”

I laughed. “Oh really, why’s that?”

“I don’t know. We’re both from Seattle, and you can just tell. You remind me a lot of my friends. The way you act… it’s like you have a great aura.”

I, of course, was pleased as punch that he said this in front of Interested Reader. It’s always a plus when you’re complimented on your ridiculously, ridiculously sparkling personality by a guy’s friend.

I just hope he thought so too…

26 x 365: Day 1, Todd (November 2004 to 2005)

It's that day again. You always linger in my head on this day more than others. I feel the need to mention you to someone, but everyone is always at a loss of words. So, I'm going to embark on a project to commemorate you. In my own words. It's called the x365 Project—choosing 365 people who have touched your life and writing a fixed amount of words on them, every day, for a year. I'm choosing 26 words, since I soon will be living out my 26th year, and you never got a chance to. I found the x365 Project on Sweats in the City while online surfing approximately a month or so ago, and figured it be perfect to save for this day. To start with the one person who touched my life in ways that I'll never forget. And while I wax poetically every day for the next year about people who've made an impression in my life, I'll think of you.

26 x 365: Day 1, Todd (November 2004 to 2005)

I'll never forget when you took my hands at Gasworks Park and started dancing.

You were absolutely amazing.

I never called you back. I hate that.

An open-ended letter to Winter

Dear Winter,

I’m not going to mince words; I’ve never really liked you. Your frigidness really irks me. I also don’t like your dark and dreary attitude every night I get off work, and I especially find it hard to do the things I like to do in your presence, ie: sunbathing, boating, rollerblading and other outdoor activities. I much prefer your counterparts, Summer, Spring and Fall. But, I’m trying to make the best of every situation as I grow and change into a more mature 20-something. So, I’m learning to not hold grudges and see the best in those I don’t understand. That is why I’d like to tell you that I’ve recently discovered two things I really like about you, Winter:
—Being able to wear all those ridiculous matching sweat suits I bought 14 of when J-Lo made them popular. (Mint green, chocolate brown, hot pink, light pink, grey…) While I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them in public now, I still feel cozy, comfortable and cute when I put them on at home.

—Allowing myself a short Sugar-Free Irish Cream Breve because it’s cold outside. It’s my absolutely favorite sinful coffee drink, ridiculously delicious, and it just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy on the inside.
Looking forward to forging a better friendship together,
20-Something

It doesn't get much better than this...

I am still spinning from my date on Saturday. I can’t quite act all squishy and excited on my dating blog because I know he’s reading (considering that’s how he contacted me), so I’ll share the details here.

For those of you not up-to-speed, I received an email from an interested reader who had spotted my profile on The Stranger’s Lovelab, discovered I wrote for Metroblogging Seattle, then was friends with the girl who previously wrote the dating blog I just took over, so he noticed when I started writing for that too. He sent me an email, asking me out (with his profile attached, natch), and I accepted for Saturday.

From his pictures, I could tell he was at least a little cute. But, I was not nearly prepared for just how damn cute he was going to be. When I walked into Oliver’s Twist on Saturday at 8 p.m., I could have just died and gone to heaven. My whole “super suave, not nervous at all” attitude went right out the window. Cute boys make my knees weak.

Interested Reader is tall, with a fantastic body, cute clothes, brown hair and sexy nerdy/"I’m an intellectual" glasses. He is a physical therapist with a graduate school degree, a Portland/Montana transplant, a reader of books, a liberal, an agnostic, a listener of KEXP, a player of sports (including kickball !!), and as passionate and level-headed as can be.

From the moment we started talking at Oliver’s Twist, (over two drinks, the blue cheese-stuffed dates and tomato cappuccino with grilled cheese, thanks Jenny), we did not have a moment’s lull in the conversation. We continued to the 74th Street Ale House, then onto The Great Nabob to meet a couple of his friends. We even continued our one-on-one conversation while sitting at the table with his friends, eventually resting our knees against each other (yes, I noticed), and engaging in a little flirty elbowing/other innocent contact.

By the end of the date, I was more than eager to throw my “no kisses on the first date” thing out the window. All I could think about was, “Make-out city, U.S.A!” He asked me to his car to listen to a band he kept talking to me about, which I of course accepted. There, I managed to snag a completely awkward first date kiss before I thanked him for the wonderful evening, and bid him goodbye.

I guess the great-date feeling was mutual, because I woke up Sunday morning to an email in my inbox from him. He sent me a silly inside joke ecard, and wrote:
Ha! I hope this card is as funny to you as it is to me after 5 hours of sleep. I had a great time last night with you. Definitely, looking forward to seeing you again! Have a Great Day, E
I have to admit. I CANNOT WAIT to hear back from him. Perhaps it’s super premature, but I think we’ve got something here…

Astrology report says, "Things are looking up"

If life has its ups and downs, then today is definitely an up.

I’m incredibly tired and hung over, but for some reason, I woke up smiling. Perhaps it’s because all the riff raff has died down a little bit.

Or perhaps it’s because I…

…Bought a fantastic new pair of jeans yesterday that make my butt look great
…Had a really great time out in the city last night and reconnected with some old high school acquaintances who just moved to my neighborhood
…Have free tickets to the Pyramid Get Snowed In SnowCap party tonight, which I’m quite looking forward to
…Have a fantastic date planned for Saturday at Oliver’s Twist in Greenwood with a really cute, educated and eloquent boy
…Woke up to sunshine and a little snappy song on the radio
…Am glad it’s Friday

I think it actually might be a combination of it all.
Enjoy your weekend.

Save those tears for someone who counts

At volunteering on Monday, I sat at a table with a group of junior high girls who I had met the previous week. Two of them were working on self-portraits for an art class, and so I helped them with different drawing and tracing techniques while I created a bookmark for myself out of markers and construction paper. (I knew this graphic design minor would pay off someday.)

That pesky Baby Bash biography girl from last week was sitting across the table from me, writing a letter. (Turns out, she was lying about the report. She just wanted to listen to the music instead of doing homework. Snatchdragon!) After a few comments from the girls at the table, I caught on to what they were talking about.

“Are you writing a love letter?” I asked.

“Yeah! Her boyfriend is moving to New York! She’s been crying all day!” said one of the little bossy, loud girls that I find absolutely adorable.

I quickly peeked at what it said, and saw:
Dear My Boo,

Why are you moving to New York? Why aren’t you staying here with me?
The irony of it was too much. Here I am, fielding boy problems in my life and my friends', and writing a dating blog for the newspaper. When I attempt to step outside the box in my life, you know...do something for the better good, further the future of America...I’m still dealing with relationship issues.

I just wanted to wrap her up in my arms of hindsight and tell her:

"Oh honey. This guy is only one in a long line of many. Someday, you won’t be able to even remember his name. And my goodness, save those tears for someone who counts."

Coping with Fashion

I feel pretty today.

I gave myself a manicure and pedicure last night in a pretty coral pink. I put a sexy, flouncy black pencil skirt on this morning, a silky flower top and my favorite tall black Guess boots. To top it off, I added my favorite butterfly earrings and the best berry shade of lip-gloss that I own.

I needed to feel pretty—personal relationships and friendships are melting to the ground around me. A couple of my friendships are hurting in deep, personal ways; a Dolphin Sister just broke up with the man she thought she was going to marry; my roommate is hurting from another friend’s betrayal; a girl friend of mine just found out her best friend slept with the guy my friend's been on and off dating for months; and my sister is being ousted from her social circle by a group of Mean Girls.

So in the middle of all this emotional turmoil that I’ve found myself to be at the hub of lately, I’m just going to stand here and feel pretty.

Cause it’s the only thing making me feel good right now.

Jailtime is not a detail I really need to know

Last night I received a MySpace message from a girl who I was quite close with in high school. She was not in my mutual friend group, but we had an art class together that was twice a week for three hours after school. I was quite the art nerd and so was she; so I suppose we connected on that level. She later moved to San Francisco after college to pursue graphic design, and I was able to visit her once on a road trip down Highway 101. She was someone who I admired for her talent, spirit and beauty, but we’ve since then lost contact.

Well, leave it to MySpace to allow every ghost in your past to reappear. (If you remember from a couple months ago, I received an email from a friend in high school who stole and slept with my boyfriend.) Oh, where will the wonders of MySpace lead me next...?

I opened up the message, which was a nice gesture since most people in the past just friend request you, and then you never converse after that. I get annoyed with having random people on my MySpace page that I don’t communicate with, so the “catch-up” message was a nice added touch.

It went something along the lines of:
“How’s it going? How’s life? I work here; I live here; I’m doing good…”
THEN:
“I just went through a super bad break up and ended up in jail! I have a really good attorney and shouldn’t have a problem getting it removed from my record.”
Um.

Um. What?

Should this be the definition of the term TMI?

Fluffy, Yummy, Sugary-Sweet Obsession

*I wrote this blog approximately two years ago, and it was posted on my MySpace page. I finally decided it was time to delete all the old posts. But, this one was just too good to get rid of. So, here it is again, almost exactly two years later, unedited. (Even though I feel my writing has evolved and progressed since then.) Still same ole 20-Something. Still love marshmallows!

Now that I’m 23, almost 24, and reaching all new heights of self-realization as I approach an older age, I’ve come to the conclusion that I have an unhealthy obsession with marshmallows. This is not something to be taken lightheartedly. It could quite possibly be compared to the addiction some people have with taking diet pills or, perhaps, smoking. See, I can’t just eat a substance containing marshmallows and stop there. I have to shove more and more of the said substance into my mouth until I myself am playing my own version of Chubby Bunny with whatever I’m eating that contains marshmallows. Or, one could call it chain-marshmallowing. Let me elaborate a little bit on my history of marshmallow abuse.

I guess it all started with roasting marshmallows. I’ve gone camping every year since before I was old enough to remember. Of course, roasting marshmallows was THE highlight of my camping trip. And I’m not talking about eating Smores; I hate those things. I simply wanted to roast and eat an entire bag of marshmallows to myself. I can distinctly remember the first time my dad roasted a marshmallow for me over a burning barrel on my grandparents' property. I was around 6 years old. See, my dad’s side of the family is a little bit country, and burning things in a barrel on your property I suppose is somewhat normal. Now that I think back on the moment, the fact that he was probably burning garbage in that barrel and then roasting my marshmallows over it is a bit weird. But anyway, back to my first marshmallow.

My dad was describing to me the whole time about the proper ways to roast a marshmallow. Turn the stick; don’t let it catch fire; blow it out quickly if it does. That’s the proper way, right? No, my dad taught me that they’re best when they are charbroiled and black. A bit weird, perhaps. So my dad finishes “roasting” my marshmallow and tells me to take a bite out of it. I leaned forward, resting my fingers on the stick and drew it toward my mouth. The marshmallow exploded in my mouth in a poof of black, charred, ashes. Let’s just say my dad had over-roasted the marshmallow a bit. But that did not ruin my first marshmallow experience, maybe it only made it stronger. They say everything traces back to some childhood experience. I will say that charbroiling my marshmallows the way my dad did is the only way I roast them, and now when I go on camping trips, I am constantly ridiculed for the way I roast marshmallows. Thanks dad.

It moved on to roasting marshmallows over the kitchen stove. See, I could only go camping in the summer, and since I live in Seattle, that is only four months out of the year when I can roast marshmallows. Too bad I don’t live in the country, then I could just roast them over a burning barrel of garbage. But, alas, I have to result to roasting them over the burner in my house. This method is actually quite effective if you turn the burner up to the highest setting and have a bunch of those little wooden shish kabob sticks.

And from there, it has only gotten worse. I eat Peeps by the package. It used to be that you could only find them during Easter. But now, they make Peeps for every occasion. Yeah for me. They’ve even started flavoring them. My favorite is the strawberries and cream Valentines Day ones. Of course, much like my charbroiled roasting method, I’ve created a psychotic method to eating marshmallow Peeps as well. I have to open the package and let them sit out for AT LEAST two weeks, so they get nice and stale. Then I eat them. God, are they good. I always go to drug stores after holidays and stock up on them when they are 39 cents so I can have enough until the next holiday comes around.

So, name anything that has marshmallows in it, and I eat it with excess. Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream? The best! But only because I actually dig the marshmallow ribbon out of it until all that is left is chocolate ice cream. Sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving? So good! But I scoop as many marshmallows off the top as I can without looking like a jerk, then I’m sure to go back at least once to add more marshmallows before the yams are gone. Hot chocolate? Only good with loads and loads of the damn little white things. I’m not kidding, I will heat my hot chocolate, add marshmallows, drink it down part way while consuming all the marshmallows, add more marshmallows, reheat it, drink a little etc. You see how this is going. And I’m probably the only person who actually knows what a Fluffmutter sandwich is. Sounds a little erotic, huh? Guess again. It’s a peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich. I f*ing love marshmallow fluff. It is the ultimate marshmallow invention. I WILL and DO buy a jar and eat it straight out with a spoon. I think that is where I finally realized that I have a MAJOR and IRREVERSIBLE problem.

Now that I’ve come out of the closet about my marshmallow obsession, I will tell you what spurred my self-analyzation. They have now invented Marshmallow Microwave Popcorn. And I am doomed. I saw a commercial for it on TV, and thought to myself, “Hmm. That might be kinda good.” Keep in mind that I HATE popcorn. I never buy the stuff. I think it’s foul, smelly, nasty, insert every gross adjective you can think of here. I never buy it at a movie, and if I walk into a room after popcorn has been popping, I almost want to barf. But, if it has marshmallow on it, how bad can it be? Well, let me just tell you IT’S F*ING AMAZING. I want to eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The only problem is, one damn package has approximately 700 calories and 42 grams of fat. I’m not kidding. Isn’t that worse than a Big Mac?

In conclusion, if you see me walking around in five years, fat as all hell, a little bit squishy in all areas, and probably resembling somewhat of a round, puffy marshmallow myself, (Hell, I am pretty pale and my skin could probably give off a whitish glow), then you’ll know why.

I, 20-Something, am a marshmallow addict.

Happy Halloween 2007!!

Halloween is my ALL TIME favorite holiday. Seriously. I'm usually planning my costume for next Halloween on Halloween, and perfecting my plan months before October 31st actually rolls around. But, it's not just dressing in costume that I love. It's the scary movies, the decorations, the candy (damn fun-sized candy bars!), all the events and especially the Halloween spirit. I really brought my Halloween obsession to new levels this year.

Sarah and I decorated our apartment to be SUPER SPOOKY. I'm somewhat regretting having to now take down all the SUPER SPOOKY spiderwebs that are on every surface of our house, but whatever. We threw a really fun girly pumpkin carving party with a champagne Witch's Brew, treats for our guests and lots of laughs with some of my closest girlfriends. Sarah and I carved PARTY CREEPY pumpkins, basically because we like to party creepy. Totally classic. Thanks for all who came:

In the meantime, I've been working hard on my Jem costume. The Dolphin Sisters and I decided that I'd be Jem and they'd be The Misfits—Jem's rival rock band from the 80s cartoon. My mom and I printed out pictures of Jem's original costume, and then we spent hours at the fabric store, picking out the fabric and patterns to make it exact. My mom couldn't have done a better job. While she sewed it, I looked at approximately 50 different Web sites, trying to find the perfect wig. I finally found one in white, then had to look-up directions to dye it the perfect light pink. This, of course, ended up in a huge mess and pink spots all over me and Sarah's white bathroom rug and accessories. Sorry roomie! It's a tough price to pay to be the perfect Jem for Halloween:

Jem and The Misfits—Pizazz and Stormer—at Damon's 30th Surprise Party

Jem and her Pirate Wench at Kelly's Oktoberfest/Halloween party

Pirate Wench stole my microphone—that bitch! She is not truly outrageous!

Jem and Eve and Eve's Halloween party

Glamour and glitter and fashion and fame...Jem, Jem is my name!

So, friends, it's been a TRULY OUTRAGEOUS Halloween. I've got one more stop tonight at the Underdog Seattle Halloween party, where I'll try to hide my sniffles and illness in an attempt for one last night in my best costume to date. The only thing that worries me is how I'm ever going to top it next year...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Please don't fall off this pedestal

Now that Dubliner Man Crush has called, and our conversations will hopefully and eventually cumulate into a date with the sexiest man alive [well, besides, that one from a couple weeks ago, natch], I’m aware that there’s a slight little problem:

I’ve put him up on a pedestal.

A far-reaching, tottering, teetering little pedestal.

What are the imminent dangers of this? Well, that the chase won’t lead up to the catch. That he won’t be able to carry a conversation, or will be totally boring and we’ll have nothing in common. Or worse, he won’t have a sense of humor, and I’ll have to explain all my jokes or finish my sarcasm off with, “I’m just joking.”

A good friend of mine recently said, “I hope he's romantic, courteous, holds intelligent conversations, sticks to his views and is really good at making out! That’s what I hope for you!”

Me too, friend, me too…

Role Model Extraordinaire

I just started volunteering at 826 Seattle, a nonprofit started by Dave Eggers that is designed to help children improve their writing skills. My Mondays now consist of getting up at 6 a.m., squeezing in seven hours at work, driving an hour from Federal Way to Greenwood to volunteer for three hours and then jumping back on 99—starving and exhausted—to head home during peak rush hour. Needless to say, I have a reason to dread getting up on Monday morning even more than ever now. But this volunteering thing is supposed to be rewarding...or something.

Last night was my second day as a drop-in tutoring volunteer. I started out by helping Student A write a report on the rapper Baby Bash, specifically the song Cyclone by Baby Bash, featuring T-Pain. (I’m T-Pain, walk it out! Ah walk it out, walk it out!) Her paper was supposed to provide a biography for Baby Bash and then talk about a song of his that she chose. She started writing her report from the Wikipedia entry for Baby Bash, which she basically copied sentences from verbatim. (Oi. That state of education after the Internet—good or bad?!)
“Ok. Well, let’s look here. It looks like his parents were addicted to heroin, and he sold crystal meth in college… So, how can we write a sentence to talk about his life history with drugs?” I proposed.
During this very educational writing session, the Cyclone song was on in the background, and every time it reached the end, she’d start it over again. I think I listened to Cyclone at least 10 times yesterday. Let me tell you how awesome it is to listen to a crappy rap song on repeat when you’re surviving on less sleep than you’re used to. We researched a little bit of Baby Bash’s very rewarding and prolific life, then she decided to switch to writing about the song.
“Have you seen the music video?” she asked, while clicking on the link.

“Um, I don’t think so,” I answered as the video started playing and half-clothed women started grinding on the lap of Baby Bash while he sat in a strip club that had XXX in the background. “Um, is it okay…” I looked over my shoulder to see if the other volunteers and the director could see what we were doing, “…Do you think we’re allowed to be watching this? I mean, it’s strippers and is sort of offensive.”

“Just think of it as a bathing suit!” she chimed back.

“Well, I’m not offended by it, that’s not what I meant. What if the other kids see it…”
She shrugged her shoulders and started the video over again. At this point, I was a little embarrassed to be watching a hardcore rap video with strippers alongside a 13-year-old. Let’s see, if her mom could see me now,…
“What is this guy saying? He’s just repeating cyclone over and over again…” I asked while trying to not sound strained and attempting to take her away from the music video. She clicked on Google and looked up the lyrics to the song:
She Moves Her Body Like A Cyclone
And She Makes Me Wanna Do It All Night Long
Going Hard When They Turn The Spotlights On
Because She Moves Her Body Like A Cyclone
Just Like A Cyclone
“I don’t understand what it means…” she said.

“Um, well, I think it’s because she twists her body when she dances, sort of like a cyclone or tornado.”
At this time, the Director of Drop-In Tutoring rescued me and steered me toward a table of five middle school girls between the ages of 13 and 15 who needed me to help them focus because they were talking too much. (I totally remember what it was like to be a gossipy girl back then and LOVED going to class just so I could sit and talk to my friends. I was always one of those kids that got the “talks too much” rating on my citizenship report.) I sat down with the girls midst their conversation...
“What’s your most embarrassing story!” one yelled.

“Uh. Well. I don’t think I can tell you guys that. It’s not very appropriate,” I answered. [Drugs, alcohol, sex]

“Come on! We’re all girls! You can tell us!”[Tampons, training bras, kissing]
I tried to change the subject, but they would not relent. I digress.
“Ok, I'll tell you an embarrassing story. Well, I feel asleep one night [passed out completely wasted] while trying to make pasta on the stove. I went to bed, trying to watch a movie, and I woke up with eight fully uniformed firefighters in my apartment. I was wearing a nightgown [itty bitty butt-baring nightie], and they had to break in cause I didn’t hear the alarm [break the door down cause I slept through the alarm for an hour cause I was wasted.]”
Eff me. I don’t know if I’m cut-out for researching rap lyrics about sex and censoring my most embarrassing stories for a group of middle school girls. It makes me feel older and less wholesome than I thought was...or something.

So, this volunteering on Monday thing...Rewarding? Maybe.

Nervewracking that I’m not the best role model for these little girls?

Probably.

He's BAAACK!

UPDATE: Remember that random Dubliner Man Crush story?!

Well, I got my haircut again on Friday. Who should happen to be sitting in the chair when I walk in—DUBLINER MAN CRUSH. Again. Unplanned. We just happened to make an appointment on the same day, at the same time, three months later. This is just getting weird.

Turns out that witty and clever text message I sent him that went something along the lines of, “I guess they give out more than just good haircuts there, eh?” was never received, and he’s been disappointed ever since and asks about me every time he goes in.

After he left, they sent him my number via text. So, the fate of this hair-salon flirting is now in his hands.

He didn't actually blow me off as previously thought. All hope is not lost.

Dubliner Man Crush is back.

And this is how I feel about that:

*For those of you who read both blogs, I did post the full story today on the other. I normally will not be cross-posting, but will occasionally have to back-fill stories for the new readers who don't know me. Besides, I thought this one was too good to leave off the dating blog. Please forgive.

Currently Feeling: The rush to get all the last-minute costume things completed this week.
Currently Anticipating: Going back to bed. So. Tired.

Jem is Truly Outrageous!

I just received the wig for my Halloween costume in the mail today at work. I wondered briefly if the mail room guy was wondering why I ordered something from My Wig Store, since obviously my hair is ridiculously, ridiculously full and luscious. (Oh, if only Larisa read my blog. She'd understand the ridiculously joke. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you all think I'm totally conceited.) Anyhoo. The wig is my final touch on my most creative and possibly most fanfuckingtastic Halloween costume to date...

I'm going to be Jem from Jem and the Holograms. Larisa and Vanessa are going to be two of The Misfits, Jem's archrival rock band. The three of us are designing our costumes ourselves, which are hopefully going to look as close to the real deal as possible since we've taken photos of the cartoon characters from the Internet. My mom—sewing genius that she is—is sewing me a crazy sparkly 80s dress just like the one Jem wears, with a matching belt, etc. I've purchased a sparkly microphone, and my wig just needs to be dyed pink, ratted and hairsprayed, and then I'm set.

Be prepared for some pretty funny photos of the three of us singing the Jem theme song:

Glamour and glitter; Fashion and fame…that’s totally me, eh?

"We are The Misfits. Our songs are better..."

Truly Outrageous!

Currently Feeling: Slightly nervous that the power will go out at work because of Weatherpocalypse 2007, and I’ll lose all my work.
Currently Anticipating: Completing the final touches on my costume this weekend.
Currently Excited For: An evening out with Nate and his friends tomorrow.

A Conversation at My Local Bar

“You look like a heartbreaker. I can tell. You’ve broken a lot of hearts, haven’t you?” said a man to me in the bar last night with a hazy smile and creepy lilt in his voice.

“Um, no. Not really,” I responded, completely and utterly uninterested. I turned back around in my seat and took another sip of my wine.

“Oh yes you have. Don’t by shy to admit it. You’re a total heartbreaker,” he continued, despite my obvious attempts to blow him off.

“Uh. NO. Actually. I’m. NOT. I’ve had my heart broken more than I’ve broken hearts. Come to think about it, I don’t think I’ve broken anybody’s heart.”

“You fall in love with everyone you meet!” chimed in my male friend, sitting next to me at the bar. “You jump in way too fast and always get hurt!”

“Um. Okay. Maybe…what can I say? I’m a one-man kind of woman. I like ‘em, and I fall hard,” I responded. Somewhat a little taken back that I’m categorized and obviously a girl that “jumps in too fast” when I SO thought that wasn’t me. Gee thanks. Nothing like reading me like an open book.

“I don’t care what you say; I still think you’re a total heartbreaker,” says the bar patron again.

Some guys will never get me…

Currently Feeling:
Like I'm a writing machine!
Currently Anticipating: Our pumpkin carving party this weekend.
Currently Hating: Hurting someone's feelings.
